Fanning the 4449 in Yakamia, WA

For Father's Day I decide to take my Dad rail fanning to Yakima to see the Daylight #4449. The #4449 is a vintage steam locomotive that was used for passenger service in the 1940's. The Daylight was pulling a special excursion over Stampede Pass to celebrate it's reopening on December 7, 1996 (my birthday).

The #4449 started out in Portland on June 14, 1997 and headed to Yakima where it stayed over night. On the 15th it headed back to Portland via Stampede Pass. My Father and I woke up early on the 15th and headed toward Yakima. We followed the train from Yakima to Cle-Elum then drove back to Auburn to see it go thought the Y track in Auburn. I took the following pictures along the way.
The #4449 snaking it's way up the Yakima River valley after just leaving Yakima.
Driving along side of the Daylight, I was able to snap a picture of out the window of the car.
In Ellensburg two BNSF C44-9W painted in the "Pumpkin" scheme were put between the #4449 and the passenger cars to help with braking when the train started down the pass.
An up close and personal shot of the #4449.
The fireman was pouring on the fuel and the #4449 was pouring out the smoke for this photo runby. The train stopped and let everyone off. Then, it backed up around the corner and headed toward the photographers.
If you look closely you can see the lines of people trying to get a great shot of the Daylight.
The smoke trails high into the air as the #4449 departs Auburn. In Auburn they cut out the diesels and the #4449 pulled the train the rest of the way back to Portland.
